- 01H6CJF7Y461M6M2F0N2ZXE261 abstract "Publication Patterns An Anatomy of Periodical’s Translated Fiction Benefiting from a massive digitization wave and the concurrent development of digital humanities, many millions of pages from periodicals have recently begun to become truly accessible for wide-ranging research questions which had previously been almost impossible to ask or answer. Amid a veritable upsurge of scholarly interest in periodicals, however, the numerous installments of translated fiction (‘feuilletons’) that were so evident to contemporaries have remained underexplored. Particularly in the 1850-1950 timeframe feuilletons were widely spread. Some questions, relating to the anatomy of translated fiction, remain unresolved as the scope and nature of these translations remain guesswork, a problem noted by scholars of translation (O’CONNOR 2019; VAN DOORSLAER 2011) and the periodical (VAN REMOORTEL 2022) alike. Determining the publishing status of the numerous serialized novels and stories could prove crucial in gaining a robust understanding of the phenomenon. Focusing on a particular target culture, The Netherlands, and a particular source language, Russian, a large corpus of translations of Russian literature in Dutch newspapers has been compiled (2.239 translations), stretching from the 1830s up to 1990. Using ‘big data’ (CARISTIA 2020) allows us to discern patterns in the publishing of translated fiction, and the popular creed that newspapers were merely pre-publishing channels that preceded the ‘actual’ publication as a book volume needs to be debunked. In fact, only in the 1950s and 1960s, prepublication proper becomes important. The counterpart, ‘post-publishing’, seems to have been more important, offering novels (or parts of it) a second life in periodical format. The third option, translations designed to be singly published in a periodical, was the most common practice. Based on these findings, I propose a typology of translations commissioned (1) by the periodical’s editorial staff, (2) offered by a freelance translator, or (3) distributed by a syndicating agency. The relative autonomy of translated periodical fiction urges new questions revolving around both translator’s and editor’s agencies, and the status of translated fiction within the broader fields of media and literature, to be put on the research agenda.
