- 01HBH6AM9AKE5NP1BDQTNM0BJE abstract "Many studies into political trust are motivated by its potentially far-reaching effects on democracy. Distrust is widely argued to push people away from the status quo of representative democracy. However, there is less agreement as to what extent and under which conditions distrust pulls people towards specific rivaling decision-making models. This paper tests rivalling theories on the micro-level relationship between political distrust and support for representative democracy and its alternatives (direct democracy, technocracy, and authoritarianism). We separate the effects of structurally low trust from that of dynamically declining trust. To that purpose, we estimate Random Effects Within Between (REWB) models on three-wave panel data in four European countries (the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Portugal). We find that the structural and dynamic components of political trust have similar effects on support for representative and direct democratic models, but differential effects on support for technocracy and authoritarianism. The positive effect of political distrust on support for direct democracy is particularly strong among efficacious citizens and supporters of (populist) parties that strive for more direct democracy. All in all, our findings align best with the theoretical model of dissatisfied democrats, which posits that political distrusts relates to an ambition for more democracy and more political influence.".
