These products were separated by means of preparative TLC and identified with the aid of UV, IR and mass spectrometry as 18β-glycyrrhetic acid (Ib) and its methy ester (Ic), 11-deoxy-18β-glycyrrhetic acid (II), 18α-glycyrrhetic acid (III) and 18,19-dehydro-glycyrrhetic acid (IV). The 11-deoxy-18β-glycyrrehtic acid (II) and the 18,19-dehydro-glycyrrhetic acid (IV), which cannot be formed during the hydrolysis, must be considered as constituents of licorice.".
