Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by early-onset deficits in acquiring and executing motor coordination tasks impacting activities of daily living, leisure and play. Previous research suggests that socials skills are altered in these children. As DCD often co-occurs with autism, it can be debated if these social difficulties are signs of undiagnosed autism, are inherent to DCD or are a secondary consequence of the disorder. This study aims to map and compare social responsiveness in children with DCD, both with and without autism. Methods. An observational cross-sectional design was adopted using an online parental questionnaire including the Social Responsiveness Scale second edition (SRS-2) and the DCD-Questionnaire (DCD-Q) to assess motor performance. Participants were 102 parents of 5 to 15.5 year old children with confirmed DCD diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team. Categorized on the basis of parental report, this study included 67 children without autism (noAut), 13 with suspected autism (sAut) and 22 with confirmed autism (cAut). One-sample t-tests, ANOVA, MANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients were conducted. Results. Difficulties in all areas of social responsiveness were reported in all children with DCD, regardless of autism group. More unfavorable SRS-2 total T-scores were observed in the sAut group ( 83±15.0) and the cAut group (93±12.2) compared to the noAut group (67±16.0). Post-hoc analyses yielded significance for both autism groups compared to the noAut group (p= 0.003 for sAut; p≤0.001 for cAut). Worse DCD-Q scores were observed in cAut (26±7) and sAut (28±6) compared to noAut (32±10). Post-hoc analyses yield significance for cAut compared to noAut (p=0.043). Only in the total group, motor performance showed significant weak to moderate associations with the SRS-2 total T-score and all of its subscales except for ‘social motivation’ (r=-0.306 to -0.405; p≤0.02). Discussion. The results confirm the varied social responsiveness difficulties in children with DCD even without co-occurring autism, which might indicate that autism may be underdiagnosed in children with DCD. The lack of significant correlations between SRS-2 and DCD-Q scores within the noAut group, suggests that the social responsiveness difficulties are not only a secondary consequence of the motor problems.
