- 01HJJFJ1W4EB446ZNHE912DM0B abstract "Background: Inhibitory control (IC) refers to the cognitive ability that allows us to withhold a behavior that is no longer appropriate (Diamond, 2013). Cognitive flexibility (CF) refers to being able to flexibly shift between mental sets when newly introduced rules apply (Moriguchi & Hiraki, 2009). In the last decade, an increasing number of studies have examined IC and CF in children who stutter (CWS) and children who do not stutter (CWS) (e.g., Anderson & Wagovich, 2017; Eggers et al., 2013, 2018; Eggers & Jansson-Verkasalo, 2017; Paphiti et al., 2022; Piispala et al., 2016). These studies, even though limited in number and not all unequivocal, tend to suggest a lower performance for CWS compared to CWNS in certain aspects of IC and CF. Studies in non-stuttering populations have suggested a direct link between IC, CF and speech disfluencies (e.g., Dayalu et al., 2022; Engelhardt et al., 2010, 2013; Hart, 2008; Lee et al., 2017, Salis et al., 2013). Therefore, the purpose of the current study was twofold. First, we wanted to investigate IC and CF using a single visual domain-based paradigm in CWS and CWNS. Second, we wanted to evaluate a possible correlation between IC and CF and speech disfluencies in CWS and CWNS. Methods: Participants were 19 Cypriot Greek-speaking CWS (mean age = 7.58 years, range 6.08 – 9.17) and 19 CWNS matched for age and gender (mean age = 7.58 years, range 6.08 – 9.33). Participants completed the Response Organization Objects (de Sonneville, 2009), a visual task consisting of three blocks. The first block consists of compatible trials, the second of incompatible trials, and the third is mixed. Two types of speech samples were collected: a spontaneous conversation and a retell. All data have currently been collected. IC and CF were measured in terms of performance-costs (i.e., response times and/or error percentages) between the different blocks. Group differences were evaluated using ANCOVAs. Correlations between performance-costs and the number and/or type of speech disfluencies will be analyzed using appropriate regression models. Results and Conclusions: All participants reacted slower and/or made more errors in blocks where IC and/or CF were needed. For CF, significant between group differences were found with CWS performing slower compared to CWNS (p = 0.02). Additionally, for both IC and CF, significant block × group interactions showed that CWS, compared to CWNS, slowed down more (i.e., higher performance-cost). These results are in line with most previously reported findings of CWS of a similar age. The correlations between performance-costs and disfluencies are currently being analyzed. Findings will be discussed within existing etiological frameworks of stuttering. ".
