The Tigray war is one of the recent violent conflicts that has abruptly reversed decades of ecosystem restoration efforts. Although field-based investigation into the level of damage is complicated by access and safety issues, recent advances in earth observation tools create room to examine these changes. We analyzed changes in woody vegetation cover during the period of armed conflict (2020 to 2022) using remote sensing techniques, supplemented by field testimony and secondary data. Woody vegetation cover was detected from Sentinel 2 satellite images using Normalized Deviation Vegetation Index (NDVI) thresholding method in Google Earth Engine. The magnitude, direction as well as the mechanisms of change in woody vegetation cover varied spatio-temporally throughout the study period. While the vast majority of the landmass (80%) is found to have no woody vegetation cover beyond scattered remnant trees, Tigray’s woody vegetation cover is observed to fluctuate over 20% of Tigray’s landmass, with the highest coverage (17%) in 2020. Mainly scattered to higher areas, woody vegetation cover over the dry Afromontane forest landscape declined from about 17% in 2020 to 15% in 2021 and 12% in 2022. In some areas, forest areas are completely changed to barren lands without vegetation, burned and deforested. Land restoration practices meant to avert desertification were interrupted, warfare accompanied by shelling ravaged dry Afromontane forest landscapes further threatening to compound weather and climate, and the denial of essential services such as electricity for household or industrial use created heavy reliance on natural resources such as firewood and charcoal. Although field based further investigation is sought, the magnitude of disturbance in an area that is already at a very high risk of desertification remains unaddressed. Continued ecosystem disturbance could eventually make the domain part of a wider desert connecting the Sahel to the Afar Triangle, a scenario which may render the area uninhabitable.".
