- 01HNWKWH740MWWKPM51PFH7QYD abstract "The “biomass to chemicals” route, being the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into chemicals is an intensively investigated research field, due to its potential to mitigate climate change and replace petroleum-based products. Lignin, a complex and highly branched polymer, is the second most abundant biopolymer in biomass and holds great potential as resource for green chemicals (single-ring aromatics, amines, phenolics), polymers, and fuels. Various methods have been developed for lignin extraction, including alkaline, acid, and organic solvent-based methods. After fractionation, a cellulose pulp and a lignin fraction are recovered. The latter can be depolymerized via fast pyrolysis, resulting in liquids, rich in phenolic chemical building blocks. From a valorization point-of-view, it is however essential that biomass fractionation maximally retains the chemical integrity and structure of native lignin and cellulose. Therefore, fractionation with gamma-valerolactone (GVL), as environmentally benign solvent, was identified as the one with high potential. Yet, there are still several research gaps, which require action to unleash the potential of gamma-valerolactone fractionation and so offer scientific, environmental, and economic benefits upon further biorefining. This study aims are to evaluate the effect of key fractionation parameters (temperature, GVL/H2O-to-biomass ratio, and catalyst presence) on the lignin-rich fraction yield and structure during the Poplar nigra wood fractionation. More specifically, the fractionation parameters were sought that give a native-like lignin structure, which promotes the production of phenolics through pyrolysis. It was found that the lignin obtained from black poplar is structurally different depending on the extraction conditions. According to FTIR-ATR analysis, the lignin fractions produced at higher extraction temperatures have more secondary alcohol groups (1030 cm-1), associated with lignin the structure. Increasing the GVL/water-to-biomass ratio slightly increases the primary alcohol peak (1114 cm-1), associated with cellulose and hemicellulose structures. The peak at 1600 cm-1 (C=C stretching) is associated with the aromaticity of lignin and this signal is strong for lignins extracted at low temperature. Yet, there is not a clear trend between aromaticity and the GVL/water-to-biomass ratio. Extracted lignins were subjected to micropyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), and the volatile products detected and the changes in selectivity will be evaluated and shown in the final results, together with other characterizations.".
