- 01HQJET0NSJ68KFB28DFKN6G6D abstract "This paper situates itself against the backdrop of the ongoing China-US trade dispute. It presents a case study of the FOX and CGTN host debate, employing an innovative methodology that merges corpus analysis (semantic tagging, keyness and n-grams analysis in particular) with qualitative scrutiny of both the debate transcript and relevant news articles. Drawing upon the classic rhetorical theories by Aristotle and Confucius, the core finding suggests that, in a cross-cultural dialogue, rhetorical strategies effective in one cultural context may not translate well into another. Firstly, the often-neglected factor of this event, the level of equality of the speakers’ statuses, was discussed. With the appeal of ethos (Aristotle, 1335b) being deprived, especially by ‘the primary definer’ (Hall et al., 1987) who has natural advantages in the dialogue, it is not easy to alter the power dynamics solely through the appeal of logos. Regan being ‘the primary definer’ put Liu in a relatively more defensive side with the need to provide more justification. Secondly, Liu’s speech can be interpreted as ‘normalizing’ certain happenings in response to the accusations so as to defend ‘the Correctness of Name’ rooted in the Confucian virtues. However, Liu in the non-Chinese news coverage was portrayed as “the Party’s mouthpiece” given her seemingly less ‘authentic’ speech compared to Regan. On the contrary, while Regan’s directness seemed to be a strategy to level up the ethos through sounding ‘authentic’, it was portrayed in the Chinese media as “prejudice” and “biased”. Their credibility eroded respectively on the other side of the dialogue. Lastly, the analysis also suggested both the hosts and most of the news articles acknowledged the positive meaning of this debate and the fact that this debate set an example of future multilateral dialogue over trade negotiations. The study not only highlights the challenges in comparative rhetorical analysis but also provides an innovative corpus-assisted methodology for such studies. While some rhetorical traditions are not strictly tied to a single culture, understanding culturally specific rhetorical traditions and adopting a holistic view are equally imperative. Therefore, this research hopes to shed light on the barriers of intercultural communication that may provoke further decoupling economically and politically.".
