Long farrowing durations have negative consequences both to the sows and their piglets. Understanding the variables that can be affected by prolonged farrowing is crucial to develop strategies to mitigate these negative outcomes. The aim of the present observational study was to identify farrowing traits associated with farrowing duration and birth interval in hyperprolific sows. Fifteen hybrid commercial females (TN70) were included in this study. Farrowing duration (FD) was defined as the interval between the birth of the first and last piglet. Placenta expulsion was considered as the time between the birth of the last piglet and last piece of placenta expelled. Total born (TB) and stillborn piglets (SB) were recorded for each litter. Birth interval (BI) was calculated dividing FD by TB. Litter vitality was scored 24 h after farrowing, according to a scoring scheme of 1–4: 1 = more than four piglets show signs of reduced vitality; 2 = three to four piglets show signs of reduced vitality; 3 = one to two piglets show signs of reduced vitality; 4 = no piglet shows signs of reduced vitality. Pearson's correlation tests were performed between variables. Statistical difference was considered when p < 0.05. In the present trial, FD (min) was on average 385.62 ± 78.75 and placenta expulsion time was 247.06 ± 53.08. Sows had a mean of 22.12 ± 0.95 TB per litter and 1.25 ± 0.39 SB. BI was on average 20.59 ± 3.85. Vitality score showed a mean of 3.00 ± 0.18 for each litter. FD was positively correlated with SB (r = 0.75, p < 0.01) and BI (r = 0.85, p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with the litter vitality score (r = −0.52, p = 0.03). TB (r = 0.39, p = 0.14) and placenta expulsion (r = ‐0.06, p = 0.81) were not correlated with FD. BI showed a positive correlation with SB (r = 0.67, p < 0.01) and no correlation with litter vitality score and placenta expulsion. The fact that FD and TB were not correlated in this trial suggests that factors different from litter size might have a stronger influence on FD. The high correlation between FD and SB is in agreement with recent findings, however, it is not yet well stablished which one is cause or consequence. The negative correlation between vitality score and FD emphasizes that prolonged farrowing impairs piglets' adaptation to the extra uterine life. Hence, strategies to improve sows' energy and calcium to perform muscle contraction and decrease FD can be valuable.".
