- 01HR9E9S0MYS93G75M0BNPAMDB abstract "Bioeconomy can be the natural enabler and result of the European Green Deal transformation. Research and policy are key drivers in accelerating this transition. This presentation combines the perspectives from a European Commission (EC) policy-maker and an early-career researcher and EU Bioeconomy Youth ambassador on the important role of science in strengthening bioeconomy policy. First, a focus is given to the European bioeconomy strategy, its history and future perspectives. The main findings of the recent Bioeconomy Progress Report are discussed. It is shown that the bioeconomy continues to be a crucial policy for the EC. In addition, the importance of mainstreaming and upscaling a sustainable bioeconomy is further increasing in view of the current food and energy price crisis. In the future, additional focus is needed on developing biosphere stewardship strategies, targeted at resolving multiple pressures on land and sea. In addition, next to the efficient use of resources, a consumption-based framework targeting the overall consumption of biological resources is needed. Second, the importance of youth engagement in policy-making is discussed. In 2022, the EC started the EU Bioeconomy Youth Ambassador programme, as a means to increase youth engagement. The selected ambassadors lead by example, inform and inspire others about sustainable and circular bioeconomy; reach out to communities: students and civil society, and engage decision-makers; raise awareness about the role of the bioeconomy in everyone’s life especially in youth communities; and support the ongoing youth and education related processes of the European Union. Third, both presenters will discuss the importance of both ‘science-for-policy’, and ‘policy-for-science’. This discussion will touch on topics such as tracking the origins of a Horizon Europe call to the importance of activism and changing minds with facts and evidence.".
