Depending on the application it can reduce the carbon footprint of an industrial process and lower its overall energy use, result in less eutrophication and acidification of the environment or reduce the amount of agricultural land that is needed. Marine microorganisms are an interesting source of novel enzymes because of the diverse and sometimes extreme nature of marine environments and because they have been historically underutilized in this regard. My research aims to use activity-based protein profiling as a method to identify and characterize certain enzyme classes, such as endo-xylanases, in a collection of marine bacteria.
