- aggregation abstract "In this paper, I explore the methodological aspects related to the first cluster of my Ph.D.-research, concerned with British and French diplomatic correspondence between 1713 and 1739. Whereas traditionally, historians of international law tend to focus on published primary sources (treaties), or on doctrine, the life of international law in practice is still virtually uncovered and left to political historians. I illustrate this by pointing to the case of Italy between 1717 and 1735, where territorial reshuffles are not any longer based on feudal or succession law, but on multilateral treaties, whose elaboration can only be studied within the framework of the European diplomatic system.".
