- aggregation abstract "Since half a decade, an increasing number of applications are based on near surface mounted fiber reinforced polymer reinforcement (FRP NSM). This technique is based on the concept of embedding FRP bars into grooves made in the concrete cover of the elements to be strengthened. Compared to externally bonded FRP reinforcement (FRP EBR), the NSM system generally presents better bond characteristics, a more ductile behaviour, better resistance to mechanical damage, fire and accidental impact. Though the fibres used for FRPs generally exhibit a good fire resistance, this is not the case for the polymer binder of these composites. Hence, concrete structures strengthened with FRPs perform weak under fire conditions. In the case of NSM the FRP reinforcement is not longer externally bonded, but in slits. This offers extra opportunities for fire protection. The paper presents a literature review with respect to the influence of high temperature on the mechanical properties of FRP and filling mortar. Furthermore the flexural behaviour of FRP NSM strengthened beams (at room temperature) is investigated. The structural performance and modes of failure of the tested beams are presented and discussed. Furthermore preliminary fire test results on concrete blocks protected by different fire board insulation systems are presented. The fire resistance of the different insulation system and the proper thickness of insulation are investigated and discussed. Finally the scheduled large scale tests are discussed.".
