- aggregation abstract "Buchan was influenced by modernity, but he was also an engaged assessor of modernity, a writer who constantly explored the idea of what it meant to be modern in the early twentieth century even as he affected through action, in various ways, the discourses by means of which that modernity itself was circumscribed. However, to say that Buchan’s life was shaped by the progress of Western modernity is in one sense so general as to be meaningless. All individuals born and raised in the Western nations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were a product, in a number of ways, of their world’s progression from a feudal and agrarian economy to what we now know as a ‘post-traditional historical period marked by industrialism, capitalism, the nation-state and increasingly sophisticated forms of social surveillance’ (Barker, 125). Considered from the point of view of Buchan’s influence upon modernity, of his participation in the structures and systems which determined how modernity was developed in his lifetime, the relationship between modernity and Buchan’s life and writings can be seen as far less abstract.".
