- aggregation title "'De eenzaamheid blijft': mainstreamed Flemish deaf pupils and wellbeing at school".
- aggregation abstract "In this chapter, we will present experiences from a number of (ex-) mainstreamed deaf pupils in order to get an understanding of what effects mainstreaming has on the wellbeing and mental health of deaf students. Following some background information on education of deaf pupils in Flanders (section two) and a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of mainstream education (section three), section four focuses on a qualitative study from 2003, comparing education in a deaf school with mainstream education. De Weerdt (2003) presents the author's own experiences as a mainstreamed student and further discusses the results of interviews with ten deaf students and three professionals. Section five discusses a more recent qualitative research on the wellbeing of 12 mainstreamed Flemish deaf students. Smessaert (2009) shows that the possibility of having contact with other deaf youngsters constitutes one the most important factors for the wellbeing of deaf students in mainstream education. This is why, in Section six, we investigate whether and how schools (as well as other institutions, services, organizations) take initiatives to help deaf mainstreamers to have contact with their deaf peers and/or more broadly, with the local Deaf community and Deaf culture. Finally, in the concluding section of the chapter, we show how parents of deaf mainstreamed children are aware of the challenges facing their children and how parents respond to that.".
