- aggregation title "Explaining and preventing distrust in the criminal justice system: a combined quantitative and qualitative approach".
- aggregation abstract "It is commonly acknowledged that a lack of trust (distrust) towards governmental institutions goes together with the downfall of a democracy. Without trust, political democracy is at stake, mainly because of the doubted legitimacy of the governmental system. Hence, the aim of this PhD study is partially to describe to what extent individuals have (dis)trust in institutions of law enforcement such as the police and the criminal justice system, two key institutions of a democracy. Additionally, we aim to gain insight into some key determinants of distrust and we test to what extent these determinants are similar for both institutions. Our empirical model examines the effects of collective efficacy as a municipality level characteristic, and social capital and feelings of discontent as individual characteristics. Initially we test this theoretical model on secondary data. Furthermore, our aim is to test a recently developed measurement instrument concerning the conceptualization and operationalization of distrust. Many survey measures of trust in the criminal justice system suffer from a number of measurement problems. A major criticism is the use of single-item questions to evaluate the criminal justice system as a whole. Our work leads to a more refined analysis of the earlier designed theoretical framework based on data we have collected. Next to this quantitative approach, focus groups with key persons have to lead to realistic recommendations for policy makers to increase trust.".
