Het bleek namelijk mogelijk om door middel van reactivatie van enkele genen uit gedifferentieerde volwassen somatische cellen opnieuw pluripotente stamcellen te maken. Men hoopte dat deze cellen in gebruik evenwaardig waren aan de humane embryonale stamcellen, maar dat de ethische dilemma’s verbonden aan de embryonale stamcellen zich niet zouden voordoen. Onderzoek wees echter uit dat er toch subtiele, maar belangrijke verschillen bestaan tussen de twee typen pluripotente stamcellen. Dit is onder andere zo op het vlak van differentiatiemogelijkheden, het risico op de ontwikkeling van kanker, de immunologische afstotingsreacties en het gemak waarmee in vitro met de cellen gewerkt kan worden. Elk van beide typen stamcellen heeft op deze manier zijn voor- en nadelen bij het gebruik voor stamceltherapie. Beide typen hoeven dus niet gezien te worden als een vervanging voor elkaar, maar eerder als twee typen die elkaar kunnen aanvullen en die elk hun eigen toepassing kunnen vinden in welbepaalde interventies.".
