- aggregation title "The adverb truly in present-day English".
- aggregation abstract "The adverb truly is classified by Biber et al. (1999) as a ‘stance adverbial of actuality/reality’, together with really, actually and in fact. In contrast, Quirk et al. (1985) call it a style disjunct of modality (p. 615), which sets it apart from really and actually, which they classify as content disjuncts (p. 621). While a great deal of attention has been paid in the literature to the semantics and pragmatics of really, actually and in fact, the adverb truly has been studied much less extensively. Its historical development has been described by Lenker (2007) and Defour (forthcoming), but its usage in Present-Day English remains, to my knowledge, understudied. One reason for the neglect may be its relatively low frequency, as compared with the other three adverbs. This is obvious if one consults the BNC. The present paper takes a close look at truly on the basis of a sample of 200 instances from the BNC. It looks at the relative frequency and meaning of the various syntactic patterns in which it occurs in PDE. Lenker (2007) notes that in her diachronic corpus truly occurs as a clause-integrated manner adverb, a clause-integrated emphasizer, a propositional modifier, and a discourse marker. The paper compares these findings with the usage of truly in PDE. It is clear that there are some parallels with really in particular. Like really, truly is frequent as a premodifier before adjectives. Bolinger (1972: 95) claims that the adverb has become “a virtual intensifier”, like really. This study examines to what extent it has reached this status in the BNC corpus. Further, like really, it has developed into a discourse marker, and its semantics and pragmatics as evidenced in the BNC data are again compared with those of really.".
