- aggregation abstract "Due to urbanisation open space in Flanders is no longer uniform, coherent and homogene- ous, but rather a complex fragmented structure with different densities. This morphological transformation is driven by functional changes. This article will provide insight in these changes by focusing on four functional transformation processes: increasing residential use, economic diversification, increasing private use (including private pastures and gardens) and increasing recreational (shared) use. These transformations introduce non-archetypical uses of open space (living, non-agricultural economic activity, private use and recreation). The driving forces behind these transformations are analysed based on literature study, and an assessment of the extent and spatial impact of these functions is made through a terrain study in 27 study areas across 9 municipalities. These insights in the urbanisation process can contribute to a policy that is better adapted to current developments in Flanders’ open space.".
