Het is echter opmerkelijk hoe weinig recent kwantitatief onderzoek er bestaat naar de buurtsegregatie van etnische groepen in Nederland en België. Deze studie vergelijkt daarom de recente evolutie in buurtsegregatie van drie ‘nieuwe’ migrantengroepen (Polen, Slowaken en Bulgaren) met deze van twee ‘oude’ migrantengroepen (Marokkanen en Turken) in de Belgische stad Gent. Voor de oude migrantengroepen wijzen alle ruimtelijke indicatoren in de richting van dalende buurtsegregatie. Na een stabilisatie of zelfs lichte stijging in de tweede helft van de jaren negentig, hebben de Turkse en Marokkaanse Gentenaars zich gedurende het laatste decennium steeds meer over de buurten van de stad verspreid. De Turkse enclavebuurten hebben ook ruimtelijk aan belang ingeboet. Een deel van de Turkse Gentenaars trekt bovendien naar de suburbane, meer welgestelde buurten van Gent. Voor de nieuwe migrantengroepen is het ruimtelijke beeld gemengd. De buurtsegregatie van de Poolse en Slowaakse Gentenaars is duidelijk dalend. Ze vormen momenteel kleine en vluchtige concentraties in bepaalde buurten. Ook de Bulgaarse Gentenaars spreiden zich steeds meer over de stad. Voor deze groep toonden we echter tegelijk aan dat hun aanwezigheid in een aantal buurten zeer snel stijgt wat in de richting van Bulgaarse enclavevorming kan wijzen.".
