- aggregation title "Treatment of nonrespiratory sleep disorders".
- aggregation abstract "Key points: Due to the heterogeneous nature of the various sleep disorders, no generic approach to treatment can be proposed. In each of the major nosological categories, pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment modalities are available. The mainstay of treatment of insomnia is nonpharmacological. A stepwise treatment plan is proposed. Treatment with hypnotic drugs is appropriate as a primary step in situational insomnia. In chronic insomnia, hypnotics may be added as adjuvant treatment to cognitive behavioural therapy. The mainstay of treatment of hypersomnia of central origin is based on prescription of stimulant drugs. Other medications are available for cataplexy, one of the core symptoms of narcolepsy. RLS and PLMD are responsive to treatment with medications belonging to various pharmacological classes. Currently, DA agents are the first-line of treatment. Opioids may be used in severe cases of RLS.".
