- aggregation title "De toestand is hopeloos, maar niet ernstig: over het veronderstelde conservatisme en de permissiviteit van de Vlaamse jeugd".
- aggregation abstract "The situation is hopeless, but not serious. On the supposed conservatism and the permissiveness of the Flemish Youth. - In this short rejoinder I will formulate some critical remarks on the Tor-research on the opinions and attitudes of the Flemish youth and their teachers. In the first part of the paper I will highlight some of what I think are relatively unforeseen results of the study. I will suggest that the moderately conservative outlook, as reported in the study, could in part be the effect of the selection of problems to which the respondents were asked to react to. In the second and larger part of the paper I will discuss the notions of permissiveness, relativism and tolerance. I will argue that the notion of permissiveness as the researchers use it does not allow us to have an idea whether the Flemish youth is either relativistic or tolerant. However, I think this is a very fundamental question. A democratic society is fundamentally based on tolerance, while relativism undermines the very possibility of democracy.".
