- aggregation title "Integration of music information retrieval techniques into the practice of ethnic music collections".
- aggregation abstract "Retrieval and access of ethnic music audio documents is an area that did not get a lot of attention until recently. Current Music Information Retrieval tools have been developed for Western popular and classical music. However, ethnic music often has structural characteristics that cannot be approached with Western models and other cultures use other concepts when dealing with music. A study has been conducted to investigate current MIR research in its relation to ethnic music. This study aims to identify the potential usefulness of MIR for the access to collections of ethnic music and to provide new perspectives that are likely to be of relevance to all users and suppliers of these collections. Fundamental access problems are highlighted at the levels of (i) signal and feature extraction, (ii) symbolic and semantic information processing and (iii) metadata and context tools. Our study enlarges the ethnic music space of current MIR research and uncovers challenging issues concerning the particular context of ethnic music. Suggestions are given of research areas open to study that could contribute to the improvement of access to ethnic music collections.".
