- aggregation abstract "Favourable evolutions in emergency medicine and supporting therapy, infection control and surgical interventions have led to a significantly improved probability of survival in burn victims. Survival following severe burns depends of different risk factors. The three most important prognostic indices are older age, increasing Total Burned Surface Area (TBSA), and presence of an inhalation injury. Using those risk factors, it is possible to make a rough estimation of the prognosis. This is essential for therapeutic decisions, counselling of patients and family, and detection of trends in survival. Most studies from 1980 on showed a stabilisation in the improvement of survival. In the burn unit of the Ghent University Hospital, however, a steady decrease of mortality during the past two decennia could be demonstrated. Yet, the minimized mortality associated with severe burns, presumes that further reduction of the risk of mortality is unlikely.".
