- aggregation abstract "Sound recognition is an important element in musical development. Young children can easily recognize concrete sounds of which the sound source is easily identifiable, but the discrimination of more abstract musical signals develops only slowly. To study the development of sound discrimination and identification in primary school children, an interactive game was developed which allows to study this topic in an ecologically valid and fun way. Sound discrimination and identification of timbre and melody were investigated in six grades of primary school (age 6 to 11). Results show that there is a significant impact of age on both sound recognition and sound identification. We also found a significant correlation between the identification of sounds in a post-questionnaire and the ability to recognize sounds during the game. Furthermore, we found that children have less difficulty with timbre recognition, even very abstract timbres, than with melody recognition, and this in all six grades. Findings of the present experiment will contribute to an educational method in teaching sound recognition to primary school children and lead to the development of an age-appropriate interactive sound recognition game for music education.".
