- aggregation title "One for the road: John Geometres, reader and imitator of Gregory Nazianzen's poems".
- aggregation abstract "The reception of Gregory of Nazianzus' poetry has received less attention than the reception of his prose works, partly because of the larger popularity of the latter in Byzantium. In this paper, the influence of Gregory's poetry on the verse of John Geometres (10th century) is discussed. Two kinds of reception are analysed: eulogising epigrams on Gregory and poems inspired by Gregory. The first category, probably meant as book epigrams, combines traditional topoi with original imagery and allusions to the Theologian’s own verse, thus paying a literary tribute to Gregory as a poet: a Christian Orpheus. Before discussing the nature of John's creative imitation of Gregory, some cautious hypotheses are made about the collections at John's disposal. He certainly knew Cephalas' Anthology, to which Gregory's epigrams (A.P. VIII) were added around the year 900. On the basis of loci paralleli, it is beyond doubt that he was also acquainted with various other poems of Gregory. There are indications that his exemplar of the carmina was similar to the collection commented upon by Cosmas of Jerusalem (in passing, some new observations are given as to the precise contents of Cosmas’ collection, too). The discussion of John’s knowledge of Gregory is followed by a metrical comparison of the hexameters and elegiacs of both poets, and some remarks on genre (especially εἰς ἑαυτόν, initiated by Gregory) and form (e.g. priamel). The last and longest section of the paper offers a comparison between two paradigmatic prayers for a voyage, one by Gregory and one by John, both bearing the same rare title ἐνόδια. The discussion shows how verbal and thematic echoes of the fourth century have been put to use by a Byzantine poet of the 10th century.".
