- aggregation title "Flemish Teenagers' Media Richness: A multi-method approach to the appropriation of media technologies".
- aggregation abstract "It is widely recognised that Western households and Western teenagers have increasingly appropriated media technologies. In this paper we argue that these media technologies cannot be studied without taking the media content and the interplay between content and technology into account. After a theoretical elaboration on concepts such as domestication, identity, autonomy, double articulation and the bedroom culture, we focus on the domestic space in which Flemish teenagers appropriate media technologies. Our paper draws upon the results of the Apestaartjaren 3 research project, a joint effort of two Flemish non-profit organisations (Jeugdwerknet VZW and Graffiti Jeugddienst VZW) and the research group for Media & ICT (MICT) at Ghent University. The present study consists of a two-phased methodology encompassing a large-scale quantative study (N=1725) and 40 face-to-face follow-up interviews. The paper demonstrates the large variety in the appropriation of media technologies. It shows that the devices properties' and the contexts in which they are used play a role in how media are received and consumed. Another consistent finding in our paper is that all media technologies hold some meaning of autonomy because users can independently choose what content to consume, what files to store and with whom to communicate. Moreover, mobile devices also hold meanings of identity: teenagers can differentiate themselves from others by displaying the decisions they have made in their consumption.".
