- 1872_North_Cascades_earthquake abstract "The 1872 North Cascades earthquake occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time in northern Washington state on December 15. Intense shaking, with a maximum perceived intensity of VIII (Destructive), was felt throughout Washington, as well as the northwestern states of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, and Alberta. Because the earthquake occurred before seismometers were operating in the region, the magnitude of the shock and its location was never precisely determined, but an estimated moment magnitude of 6.5 – 7.0 was presented. Several studies of the limited intensity reports that are available for the event have taken place, and various epicenters for the event have been proposed based on these data. Proposed locations range from the east side of the Cascade Range near Lake Chelan to the North Cascades just south of the Canada–United States border at Ross Lake.".
