- Alevi abstract "Alevism (also called spiritual shiism or Sufi-shia, Turkish: Alevîlik, Persian: علویان) is a religious group within Shia Islam combined with Sufi elements such as those of the Bektashi tariqa. Alevis claim to be the followers of Muhammad, his Ahl al-Bayt, his Twelve Imams, and their descendant, the Alevi saint and Sufi master Haji Bektash Veli. They believe the path of Haji Bektash Veli is the path of Ali ibn Abu Talib. Believers live almost entirely in Turkey, with minorities in Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Crimea, the Caucasus, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Tatarstan, and the Turkish Diaspora (esp. Germany). Alevis are among larger Turkish, Turkmen, Tatar, Azeri, Zaza and Kurdish sub-ethnic communities.Alevism is also a group identity which is variously interpreted as cultural (emphasizing special traditions of poetry, music and dance), humanistic and/or political - whether leftist or Kemalist. They are not to be confused with another minority, the Alawites".
