This view envisages the migration of several Germanic peoples from the western coasts of Europe and their settlement in Great Britain in the 5th century. There is no precise date known for this process, except that it began in the early 5th century after the final departure of Roman troops (possibly around 410) and continued for some time thereafter. The arrival of a Germanic element in the history of Britain is called in Latin texts the Adventus Saxonum, a term first used by Bede in about 731.How and why the settlement process was successful, and the nature of the relationships between the Anglo-Saxons and Romano-Britons, are subjects of ongoing debate, scholarly and otherwise. This debate includes to what extent the incomers displaced or supplanted the existing inhabitants, and/or the extent to which the Romano-Britons and Anglo-Saxons influenced each other.There are few historical sources for the anglicisation of lowland Britain, fewer still contemporary with the period, and those sources are all open to a variety of interpretations. There is also a degree of uncertainty relative to more recently available evidence, largely derived from archaeology and population genetics. These uncertainties allow scholars to hold a range of views on the subject. Opinion is, at its most extreme, divided between those who hold the more traditional view of a mass migration of people from the German coastlands, largely displacing the native people; and those who hold an opposing view that sees the changes in material culture and language in eastern, lowland Britain as due to a process of acculturation, involving a negligible movement of people. There is a spectrum of scholarly opinion between these extremes.The uncertainty is increased by the specialisation of modern scholarship; a Roman period historian may not have much knowledge of Early Medieval history, and a field archaeologist may have no grasp of population genetics. In turn this creates considerable difficulties for any single scholar attempting to make a wide-ranging synthesis using cross-disciplinary data.".
