- Auberge_rouge abstract "L'auberge rouge (The Red Inn) is a famous old French criminal case. Originally named the Peyrebeille Inn, the Red Inn is located in the commune of Lanarce in Ardeche about 5 km from the market town. It is also located at the borders of the communities of Issanlas and Lavillatte. During the 19th century, it was the site of a criminal scandal, called "the Red Inn affair" which, due to the political situation at the time, took on incredible proportions. It was the scene of about 50 murders, numerous rapes, and perversions of all kinds. A rumour said that the owners used to serve dinner to their guests (soon to be murdered) with cooked body parts of previous victims. In the end, the landlords of the establishment, a couple called Martin, and their valet, Jean Rochette, were condemned to death and guillotined. But, in truth, only the death of one client, Jean-Antoine Enjolras, was clearly established when his body was retrieved from the wilderness and nothing proved he had been killed at the inn.The suspects were arrested in 1831 after a dead body was found near a river. The victim was last seen at the inn. During the trial, numerous witness testified. Finally, the innkeepers and their employee were declared guilty and sentenced to death. They were guillotined just in front of their inn. 30,000 people came to watch the execution.Today the inn exists as a tourist attraction in the district.".
