- Axe_Game abstract "The Axe Game is a high-school rivalry American football game between the Barstow High School Aztecs and the Victor Valley High School Jackrabbits in the High Desert area of Southern California. The rivalry game began in 1932 and is the second longest high-school rivalry game in Southern California. The two teams used to play for an old fireman’s axe, which would be painted in the winning school colors. The original fireman’s axe was stolen from Barstow High School’s trophy case in the 1950s and was replaced with the current axe. Keith Gunn, the head coach at Victor Valley, started the rivalry game. From 1932 to 1945 and from 1960 and 1961, the game was placed twice a year. In 1936, the game was played three times. The teams did not play in 1934 and there was a break in play in 1942, 1943, and 1977 to 1979. From 1977 to 1979, the game was stopped due to Victor Valley High School having a much larger enrollment. Barstow leads the all-time series 45-41-4.".
