It was named for historian and politician George Bancroft. The nine story building has a steel frame, which is faced in brick trimmed with terracotta. In 1925 it was expanded in size by about 1/3 along Portland Street. Built at the height of Worcester's prosperity, it was one of the city's most opulent hotels. It was operated as a hotel until 1964.The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.It is currently tied as the 11th tallest building in Worcester.".
