- Berta_Geissmar abstract "Berta Geissmar (14 September 1892 Mannheim – 3 November 1949 London) was the secretary/business manager first of Wilhelm Furtwängler then of Sir Thomas Beecham. Her autobiography, The Baton and the Jackboot (1944) gives a vivid account of the personalities of these two very different men. It also provides a personal insight into the lives and persecution from 1933 of German people who, like her, were Jews or who opposed Nazi ideas. From 1922, Geissmar worked for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Furtwängler, planning and organising with him the foreign tours which increased their prestige and stabilised their finances. She left her post in late 1934 on pain of arrest. With considerable difficulty and delay she got out of Germany and soon gained a similar position with Beecham and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She continued in this position until shortly before her death.".
