- Calgary_Chieftains abstract "The Calgary Chieftains are an Gaelic football club based in Calgary, Canada. They play at the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club grounds and are members of Western Divisional Board of the Canadian County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. In 1977, Mike Quirke of Fylemore, Co. Kerry helped start the Calgary Chieftains. Paddy McCallion, brother of Tyrone hurling star (Damien McCallion), who used to play for the Chieftains, of Tyrone descent, carried the torch into the nineties, having joined the Chieftains from their rivals in Edmonton. Noel Tuohy, from Dundalk, Louth, has been a stalwart player and spiritual leader for the club in the late nineties, along with the efforts of Adrian Lagan, Kim Tulloch and Amanda Stewart have been crucial for the club. Another stalwart of the club is Liam Mailey who has been both trainer/manager and mentor to all of the players over the past years(2004 to present) and has been the guiding factor in the clubs recent successes. The Chieftains compete every year in the Western Canadian Championships in both Men's & Ladies Gaelic football. The Men's team were the first winners of the Championship in 2004. The Ladies Team (the Chieftainettes) have been progressing in recent years. The Chieftains Men used to play regularly against the Calgary Kangaroos, a local Australian rules football team. In 2003, the first International Rules Series was played between the two teams with each team winning a game a-piece. The Aussies had the bigger margin of victory however, and so took the bragging rights.Calgarys tournament for 2011 will be played on the August holiday weekend. For more information contact Joe Whelan or Mick O Donnell on (403)371-2338.".
