It was not palisaded and had several log buildings built by the 1st Oregon Cavalry Volunteers to protect the The Dalles Fort Boise Military wagon road and gold miners from Snake Indian raids during the Snake Indian War. It was abandoned in 1869 following the end that War. The camp was named for Second Lieutenant Stephen Watson who was killed in a battle with Snake Indians on May 18th, 1864 at Luelling Springs, Oregon. His body was recovered the next day and buried at Camp Maury then days later disinterred and placed in a metal coffin sent out from Fort Dalles, sent to Fort Vancouver Washington where he now lies.".
