- Central_Electricity_Research_Laboratories abstract "The Central Electricity Laboratories (CERL) were the centre of the research operations of the Central Electricity Generating Board, based in Kelvin Avenue, Leatherhead, Surrey, England. They originated in the early 1950s as a small facility for testing materials, expanding into a large greenfield site nearby for developing and testing high voltage equipment. The atmospheric chemists developed and deployed a range of mobile air-quality monitoring equipment, producing time series data on pollutant levels around the UK. By the closure of the laboratories in 1992 following privatisation they employed over 1000 staff and were probably best known for their work on the impacts of "acid rain" (SO2 but also NOx and some work on O3) on ecosystems. Other biological work included research on the fouling of heat exchangers, Legionella in power station cooling ponds, and survey of marine life based on the capture screens at Fawley Power Station.CERL's main output consisted of publications, mainly internal research documents with varying levels of confidentiality. Latterly (especially in the biological sciences) a policy of also expecting external publication became dominant. The history of the laboratories is set out in Mogford I. (1993) CERL: From Sheds to watersheds (now out of print) Links to some of the publicly available acid rain publications can be found at http://www.chezshaw.demon.co.uk/work/research/CERL/cerl.htm".
