- Choccuma abstract "The Choccuma or Chocchuma, also sometimes called Chakchiuma were a Native American tribe that lived in the western area of modern Alabama and eastern Mississippi, residing between the territory of the Cherokee to the east and that of the Choctaw and Chickasaw. They were a very small tribe who made an occasional habit of killing Chickasaw and Choctaws. After one such incident around 1770 the Chickasaw and Choctaw were so enraged that they united to completely destroy the Chocchuma. The Chickasaw's surrounded the Chocchuma's most important village at Lyon's Bluff, near the present day town of Starkville, Mississippi from the North, while the Choctaw's surrounded the South. All of the Chocchuma warriors were killed, and all the women and children were taken captive. The alliance of Chickasaw and Choctaw warriors went on to destroy a fortified village of Chocchuma near Bellefontaine, and another near Grenada, effectively bringing an end to the Chocchuma as a people. According to tradition, the animosity of the Choctaws and Chickasaws towards the Chocchumas was so fierce and unre- lenting that they killed every dog, cat, and chicken found in the Chocchuma villages.".
