- David_Vanderpool abstract "David Vanderpool (born February 18, 1960) is an American medical missionary, devout Christian, and the CEO and founder of Mobile Medical Disaster Relief (MMDR), now called Live Beyond, which has provided medical, spiritual and logistical support to disaster ridden countries where the medical infrastructure has been damaged. Dr. Vanderpool’s non-profit organization has impacted 13 different countries around the world. Dr. Vanderpool and his Live Beyond team currently focus their efforts in Ghana, Honduras, Mozambique and Haiti. Vanderpool was born in Dallas, Texas and received his undergraduate degree from Abilene Christian University in 1982 before attending medical school at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. After medical school, Vanderpool completed two surgical residencies at Baylor University Medical Center where he trained as a vascular surgeon. After finishing his residency, Vanderpool practiced medicine in Texas for 20 years before moving to Brentwood, Tennessee in 2001, where he eventually opened his own private practice Lave MD in 2003. In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina hit the southeastern coast of the US, disaster relief was in high demand, and Vanderpool told his son to “pack your bags” as he traveled to Mississippi- officially starting Mobile Medical Disaster Relief out of a trailer. Soon after, MMDR became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and expanded to over thirteen countries including Mozambique, Ghana, and Haiti where it currently has staff members. Dr. Vanderpool took monthly leaves of absence from his private practice in Tennessee to travel abroad and deliver his surgical and basic healthcare services to the indigenous peoples in these countries. Vanderpool works to build medical clinics, train local staff, implement clean water projects, and take on micro-finance projects. Vanderpool also puts a major focus on providing spiritual guidance and spreading the word of God and Christianity to the local population wherever he goes. In 2010, after a powerful earthquake struck Haiti, Vanderpool traveled to the devastated regions in Haiti to use his skills as a trauma surgeon to provide immediate care to those in need and officially changed the name of his non-profit organization to Live Beyond. In 2013, Vanderpool sold his Lave MD private practice in Brentwood, TN and permanently moved to Thomazeau, Haiti where Live Beyond is currently based. His stated goal in moving to Haiti was to continue to deliver care to the Haitian needy and in addition actively convert the local Haitian population from a religion based on voodoo spirituality and rituals to Christianity.".
