- Featherboard abstract "A featherboard is a safety device used when working with stationary routers or power saws such as table saws or bandsaws. The purpose of a featherboard is to prevent fingers from slipping into the saw blade. A feather board may also help ensure an accurate cut by securing a workpiece against the fence.Featherboard shapes and sizes vary depending on the tasks for which they are intended. A serviceable featherboard can be shop-fabricated from an approximately 3/4 × 3 × 11 inch piece of straight grained, defect-free wood cut crosswise at a 45-degree angle on one end. Several parallel cuts in the direction of the grain create fingers or "feathers" that flex in the direction of workpiece travel, preventing the workpiece from being dragged backwards by blade friction.Shop made feather boards work well, but they must be clamped in place somehow. This takes time. Many woodworkers seldom use feather boards because they take too long to set up. The quicker a featherboard can be set up, the more often it gets used, just as safety glasses and seat belts get used because they only take seconds to put on.An improved feather board was invented (patent # 5367933) in 1990 by Jerry Jaksha to make them as quick to set up as using fingers to guide wood. The magnetic Grip-Tite featherboard is held to a cast iron table top or steel sub fence by high strength permanent magnets. A large handle and integral release switch make one handed setup possible.Featherboard hold downs are attached to the rip fence. They can be used on any width wood or plywood. Spring loaded wheels on these hold downs can be used to pull wood to the rip fence while preventing kickback by keeping the wood from rising. The saw guard can be replaced by a fence mounted guard, allowing safe cuts of narrow pieces.Featherboards are also useful for edge jointing, and making moulding on router tables.".
