- Free_Cossacks abstract "Free cossacks - concept, which can have different meanings: unregistred, that is self-proclaimed, "free" cossacks, people who claimed themselves cossacks, often meaning under this something like "free people by the will of God", especially frequent used this name when fighting for freedom, rights and liberties of enslaved masses of people in Ukraine and Russia in XVI-XX cc. On the other hand, cossacks of the registries, registered cossacks often considered such cossacks as non-cossacks, claiming that only people mentioned in some or other cossack registries are cossacks. This conflict survived through centuries and had made great impact on the ideals, appeals and process of Civil War for Democracy 1917-23 on the territories of former Russian Empire during which important part of cossacks of Russian Imperial Army registries lost the war to unregistried cossacks and their descendants, were killed, repressed or had to emigrate in other countries of the world (see decossackization); organization of Ukrainian imperial registry cossacks and peasants in 1917–1923 years, see - Free Cossacks (organization). It's leaders took the name "Free cossacks" to underline it's "free", "people-oriented" character and connection with people cossack movements of previous centuries, meaning by such slogans to get support of wide masses of people. But often in reality in different regions of Ukraine of that time this organization included different people with different goals, which had different support of people masses. Those who didn't like this organization organized and self-organized in other ways and often under other names, among them we must mention Red Cossacks Army, military organization of one of the governments, soviet pro-bolshevik government of Ukrainian Republic of that time and Batka Nestor Mahno's, anarchocommunist Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine and small but numerous armies of self-proclaimed village otamans of some or other villages, towns and regions of that day Ukraine, all of them also appealing to and used idea and heritage of cossacks of past centuries in some or other ways;".
