- Frigate_Ecojet abstract "The Frigate Ecojet program is the development of a new wide-body medium haul civil aircraft using a new integral aerodynamic and design configuration. The project started in 1991 as Tu-304 under leadership of Valentin Klimov (then chief designer of Tupolev design bureau) and initially was projected to carry up to 500 passengers. Since 2004 the project is carried out by a new design bureau, instituted as the daughter company of Tupolev and headed by Valentin Klimov while the company is headed by Valentin Klimov's son, Alexandr Klimov. The primary goal of the Frigate Ecojet program is the development of a range of new wide-body medium-haul aircraft based on a new, aerodynamic and structural design, which will be operational by 2018. The new aircraft's integrated efficiency is estimated to be 15-20% higher compared to the existing 2010 version of the aircraft. The project is focused on the 3000–4000 km range segment of air transportation. The operation of wide-body aircraft is viewed as effective in this range. At the moment, more than 56% of wide-body aircraft flights have a range of 3000 km or less. In some regions of the world this share is much higher. Besides technological innovations, Frigate Ecojet is foreseen to have a significant economic advantage over competing wide-body airliners simply because it will be optimized for this flight range, while other wide-body airliners are designed for the requirements of long distance long-haul flights (including factors such as fuel capacity) which are in excess of the needs of shorter flights.[citation needed]".
