- Global_Health_Fellows_Program abstract "The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP), with offices in Washington, DC and Oakland, California is a five-year cooperative agreement with the US Agency for International Development and is led by the Public Health Institute. The partnership includes Harvard School of Public Health, Management Systems International, and Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.GHFP seeks to improve the effectiveness of USAID population, health and nutrition programs overseas by developing and increasing capacities of health professionals. GHFP's main areas of focus include: 1) the recruitment, placement, career development and mentoring of fellows – technical experts at the junior, mid and senior levels—and interns both in Washington DC and overseas; 2) implementation of a diversity initiative that creates opportunities for underrepresented populations in the field of global health; and 3) organizational development assistance for current USAID staff in Washington DC and USAID Missions and professional development opportunities for fellows and USAID staff.Vision: Using evidence-based best practices, the program’s vision is to create a large, sustainable pool of global health professionals and responsive organizational and professional development programs.Fellowships: GHFP currently has approximately 100 fellows based in Washington, DC and at USAID missions overseas. The fellowships span two to four years and the areas of technical expertise include HIV/AIDS, family planning/reproductive health, maternal and child health, knowledge management, avian influenza, malaria, TB and Health Policy.Internships: GHFP has two summer internship programs. The USAID Internships are based in the Bureau for Global Health and last for 12 weeks. The overseas internships are with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and also last for 12 weeks. In 2009, the overseas interns were posted with NGO’s in Cambodia, India, Senegal and Uganda.Public Health Institute. The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent non-profit organization working in public health. PHI promotes health, well-being, and quality of life for all people through research and evaluation, training and technical assistance, and by building community partnerships. Since its inception in 1964, PHI has handled an array of projects ranging from simple contracts to large, multi-year, multi-site programs with national and international impact.".
