He is a lawyer by career, following studies at the University of Saskatchewan.Kirkby was mayor of his home town Prince Albert from 1988 until 1993, when he began to campaign for a seat in Canadian Parliament with the Liberal party. He won his home riding in the 1993 federal election then served in the 35th Canadian Parliament. Kirkby lost to Reform party candidate Derrek Konrad in the 1997 election, campaigning in the riding which was by then restructured as Prince Albert.After he left Canadian politics, Kirkby moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba to resume his legal career. He made an unsuccessful bid to become Winnipeg's mayor in 2004.Gordon Kirkby moved back to Prince Albert and started up his own law firm. Kirkby took on a partner later on in Philip Fourie making their law firm Kirkby Fourie Law.".
