- Grail_Psalms abstract "The Psalms: A New Translation (most commonly known as the Grail Psalms) is a 1963 English translation of the Book of Psalms by the Ladies of the Grail from the French La Bible de Jérusalem. The translation philosophy followed the school of Fr. Joseph Gelineau, who advocated a simple vernacular in the rhythm of the original Hebrew text (see: Gelineau psalmody). The Grail Psalms were adopted by ICEL for liturgical use in the Liturgy of the Hours in 1973. Some Conferences of Catholic Bishops, such as that of England & Wales, also utilized the Grail for the Responsorial Psalms in the Lectionary for Mass. As such, it is the most well-known and recognizable translation of the Psalms in the Catholic world. The ICEL Psalter was meant to replace the Grail Psalms for liturgical use, but the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments did not approve of the liberal approach used in its translation. In 2001, Pope Bl. John Paul II promulgated the encyclical Liturgiam authenticam, which called for a more literal translation of liturgical texts. This lead to an interest in updating the Grail. In 2008, Conception Abbey completed a wide-scale revision in accordance with the encyclical called The Revised Grail Psalms, which have since been approved for liturgical use in most English-speaking countries. The African edition of the Liturgy of the Hours has already incorporated the Revised Grail, and it is expected that the ICEL's second edition will as well.".
