Each year GFF presents diverse range of films from the GCC and beyond. The sixth edition was held from April 11 to 17, 2013. The GFF is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).Overview:Launched in 2008, the festival aims to celebrate the highest standards of Gulf Cinema. Since its inception the Festival has served as a platform to develop the local and regional film culture in the Gulf creating greater opportunities for filmmakers to screen their films and develop future film projects. In addition, the Gulf Film Festival is home to the International Shorts competition honouring talent from around the world. In presenting the best of Arab cinema from the Gulf countries, the GFF has become a destination festival for the international film community to discover state of the art cinema in the region. The GFF has dedicated a number of impactful industry activities under the umbrella of the inaugural Gulf Film Market, which runs during the festival and is geared toward GCC nationals in the film business at all levels. Film programme:In 2012 GFF screened a line-up of 155 feature films, shorts and documentaries from 40 countries which included 63 world premieres, 14 international premieres, 73 Middle East premieres and 17 GCC premieres. In 2013 GFF screened 169 quality films from 43 countries, including 78 world premieres, 15 international premieres and 42 Middle East premieres.In Competition:The festival is an important venue for artists to have their works seen and recognized, and GFF comprises four prestigious competitions offering prize money of 500,000 AED for fiction and documentary films.The GFF Official Competition comprises the following:• Official Gulf Competition - Features: Open to Gulf filmmakers or filmmakers with a film that showcases the region. Fiction and non-fiction films may compete in the features categories. • Official Gulf Competition - Shorts: Open to Gulf filmmakers or filmmakers with a film that showcases the region. Fiction and non-fiction films may compete in the shorts categories. • Official Gulf Students’ Shorts Competition: Open to students in the Gulf with fiction or non-fiction short films.• Official International Shorts Competition: Open to film-makers from around the world with fiction or non-fiction short films.Out of Competition:GFF’s out-of-competition selection is as diverse as it is unique. • Lights, an array of short films from some of the GCC’s most dynamic talents.• Intersections, which favours bold subjects and stylized films from around the world. • Films for Children, a wonderful selection of animated and short films for young audiences.GFF Honourees: Each year, GFF honours legends from the GCC for their outstanding contribution to cinema. In 2013 the honoree was Kuwaiti stage and film actor, writer and arts administrator Mohammed Jaber.Previous honourees include:• 2012: Bahraini filmmaker Bassam Al-Thawadi.• 2011: Mariam Sultan, Mohammad F.
