In 1908, he founded a Seattle postal workers union chapter. He published a play entitled The Colonel and His Friends in 1913. He was arrested and convicted of sedition in 1918 for opposing the draft. His sentence included two years at McNeil Island and later time at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. While in prison, he was tortured; street rallies erupted among the labor movement in Seattle as a response. He was released from prison in 1920. In 1931, he founded the Unemployed Citizens's League in Seattle. In the early 1930s, he was an administrative assistant of Marion A. Zioncheck, a congressman representing Washington's 1st congressional district.".
