- James_Alexander_Seton abstract "James Alexander Seton (1816-2 June 1845) was the last Englishman(in fact Scots a decendant of the Earls of Dunfemeline) to be killed in a duel on English soil.Seton was born in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, in 1816, the son of Colonel James Seton and Margaret Findlater. His grandfather was governor of St Vincent in the Caribbean. James Alexander Seton served briefly as a cavalry officer. Between March 1837 and March 1838 he was attached to the 3rd, 11th and 12th Light Dragoons. His rank was never higher than that of cornet, despite the fact that he is styled "Captain Seton" in many histories of the duel.He married Anne Susannah Wakefield in May 1838 and they had one child, Marion Frances. Some time during the early 1840s he and Susannah rented rooms in Southsea near Portsmouth, Hampshire, and there came into contact with Lieutenant Henry Hawkey and his wife Isabella. Seton began a pursuit of Isabella which eventually brought him into conflict with her husband. After an altercation at a ball in the King's Rooms, Southsea, Hawkey openly insulted Seton and he felt obliged to issue a formal challenge to a duel. This took place the following day, and Seton was struck down by a bullet which entered his lower abdomen. He was taken to the Quebec Hotel in Portsmouth and eventually operated on by the eminent London surgeon Robert Liston. The surgery appeared to go well, but signs of an infection soon became apparent and Seton quickly began to go downhill. He died on 2 June 1845.".
