In the 90s he became a member of the National Alliance and in 1999 was one of the founders of the National Renewal Party. On 25 June 2005, at the party's 2nd National Convention, he was elected President.A graphic designer by profession and a teacher, he married at Lisbon, Mercês, on 30 November 1984 Ana Mafalda de Aragão Morais de Utra Machado, born in Lisbon, Alvalade, on 23 September 1962, daughter of Jorge de Freitas de Utra Machado and Maria João de Medeiros de Aragão Morais, and is the father of five children: Pedro (born Lisbon, Alvalade, 4 February 1986), Madalena (born Lisbon, Alvalade, 23 June 1987, a licentiate in Law from the University of Lisbon), Frederico (born Lisbon, Alvalade, 18 April 1989), José (born Lisbon, São Domingos de Benfica, 14 October 1993) and Luís (born Lisbon, São Domingos de Benfica, 9 September 1998) de Utra Machado Pinto Coelho.
