- Lehigh_Coal_&_Navigation_Company abstract "The Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company, known locally in the Lehigh Valley as the Old Company (while Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company is the 'New Company'), was a mining and transportation company that developed from the repeated inability of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company to deliver the high quality coal to market on its own. Two industrialists, Josiah White (1780-1850) and Erskine Hazard (1790-1865), fed up with sporadic and unpredictable coal deliveries leased the rights to the coal company lands in 1818 and started bringing technology to bear on the problem.Soon after, also in 1818 they formed the 'Lehigh Navigation Company' to install locks, dams, and weirs, improving the navigability of the rocky, rapids stricken Lehigh. In 1827, the company built the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway to move coal, the first coal road and just the second railroad company in the country after the B&O.'Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company' was created by the merger of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company, tasked with developing the mine and building the haul road to the river, and the Lehigh Navigation Company, tasked with developing the waterway into a navigable canal. The merger constituted the organization of the first interlocking companies in the commercial history of America.".
